Using Your Local Media to Full Advantage as a Small Business Owner
Small business owners, take note! I ran across an article today at Entrepreneur.com from December of 2016, “How to Get the Media Hooked on Your Company.” It is a great read, plus it is short and concise. As a small business coach and consultant, I often help clients craft their marketing plans, and PR is always part of the options I help them explore.
Here was the section that caught my eye:
“Start local.
Local media is a great place to start and they are often love stories with a local tie in. Also, many bigger shows have “scouts” who look for things that are buzzing in regional areas, which may be a foot in the door for national outlets. Also, if you’re a newbie to media and have no media resume, start local, get your feet wet, and build from there.”
Local is increasingly important in your small business marketing plan these days! The article highlighted the need to know the media outlet you are targeting. To me, that is simply basic protocol, and the same thing you did when you went for your very first interview with your A-List potential employer (right??!!). This article also covers social media, twitter, making sure your website is up-to-date (huge, huge topic for most overworked entrepreneurs!), and it had great sections on your hook and your pitch paragraph. The point of the story is that marketing takes time. It does. It also takes a plan and perseverance. Read the full article, “How to Get the Media Hooked On Your Company.”
